"Reward for Bravery"

There was once a kind
Duke. He was loved and respected by his subjects. This Duke had a wicked brother. His name was Sitan. Sitan rebelled against his bathala. He drove away the Duke. The Duke was a peace loving person. He left the Dukedom. He went to the forest called kaluwalhatian. His followers also went with him. There he led a peaceful life with his followers. Sitan became the Duke.

The Duke had a daughter. Her name was Dian Masalanta. Sitan also had a daughter. Her name was Manisilat. Dian Masalanta and Manisilat were fond each other from their childhood. Manisilat wanted Dian Masalanta to be with her in the
palace. Sitan allowed Dian Masalanta to be in the palace with his daughter. This was for the sake of his own daughter, Manisilat.

Sir Dumangan was friend of the elder Duke who was in the Kaluwalhatian. Sir Dumangan died leaving all his property to his eldest son whose name was Amanikable. Amanikable was jealous of his younger brother whose name was Apolake. Amanikable did not give any part of the property or money to Apolake. He did not even educate Apolake either.

In Duke Bathala’s court, there was a powerful wrestler. His name was Mapulon. No young man dared to challenge Mapulon. But Apolake accepted the challenge. Oliver met Mapulon secretly. He instructed Mapulon to do the worst to Apolake.

At the wrestling place there were many people. Duke Bathala was also there. In the earlier matches Mapulon threw little challengers one after another. All the three challengers had broken their ribs. They were struggling for life. Manisilat and Dian Masalanta also had come there. Duke Bathala asked the girls to talk to the young man, Apolake. Bathala had felt that Mapulon would throw Apolake down in the fight. The girls approached Apolake. They requested him not to fight. Apolake refused gently. He said, “I have no one to care for me. I do not care even to die.”

The match began. Apolake was much stronger than Mapulon. Apolake lifted Mapulon above his shoulders. Then he threw him down. Mapulon became unconscious after falling. Bathala and all others were happy. They congratulated Apolake. Apolake told Bathala, “I
am the second son of late Sir Dumangan.”

Bathala did not like Apolake from that minute onwards, because Bathala had not liked Sir Dumangan.

The two girls on the contrary praised Apolake. Dian Masalanta was happy. Sit Dmangan had been her father’s friend. She then took out a chain from her neck and presented it to Apolake. This was the reward for his bravery.
